XI; CAUSE & EFFECT
Definition
The term "Cause and Effect" is a term you've heard since elementary school, but its use can be used up to the world of work. Sentences that contain elements of cause and effect usually involve an activity that makes something happen, and the result of that actvity. Cause and effect text is a type of paragraph that contains the author's analysis of cause and effect.
Generic Structure
1. Have a main idea on the topic of sentences that will be covered in the whole paragraph.
2. Have supporting details or supporting sentences in the form of causes.
3. End with a concluding sentence or a conclusion in the form of a result,
Language Form
1. Using tenses that are dependent on the context of the time in a sentence, in other words, can
be the past tense, present tense, or future tense.
2. Many use verbs or verbs in active and passive sentences.
3. Using transitions such as, due to, because, consequently, as a result, and causes.
4. Using third person point of view.
Clue Words
1. Cause : such as, because, so that, so, cause, unless, and since.
2. Effect : if, consequently, therefore, thus, effect, etc.
Example
Cause :
1. We forgot to set the alarm last night, so we all woke up late this morning.
2. Since we run out of milk, I have to go to the store.
3. People lost their job because this pandemic.
Effect :
1. If you play all day, you can be scolded by mom.
2. We will be late for school, therefore we must prepare.
3. It's his birthday today, thus I will buy a cake.
